Purdue campus is very large, which is especially inconvenient if you live all the way on the west end of campus and have classes on the east side. To address my need for reliable and fast transportation, I built my own electric skateboard.
Design Requirements:
10 miles of range
30 mph top speed
enough torque to climb steep hills
Further Design Rationale:
I chose to use dual motors in order to provide redundancy in the case of ESC, motor, or belt failures. The wheels I chose to use are very large (110mm diameter) compared to regular skateboard wheels (60mm diameter) in order to provide a smoother ride and to better handle bumps.
Final Metrics:
Consistently reaches 10 miles of range on a single charge
35+ mph top speed
The board has never been unable to climb a hill
Notes After 2 Semesters of Use:
The final board has held up extremely well through various conditions included temperatures below 20 degrees F and rainy weather. The only place that the board is starting to show wear is in the tires.
